How to Know if Your Window Seal Has Failed

April 17, 2023

Window companies provide precious services. According to the Department of Energy, about 25%-30% of heat and cooling gains and losses occur through your windows and doors. Older windows tend to lose their seals which creates drafts, which means energy losses. How do you know when you should call one of the trusted window companies because your seals have failed? Let's take a look!

Fog

If your windows become foggy between the double or triple-pane glass, you have a real problem. Seals between double-pane or triple-pane windows are supposed to create an air-tight seal. When the seal is damaged, the windows will fog up. The fog then gets trapped between the windows when the seal is bad. You will not be able to clear the fog from the window without help from a professional.

Condensation

It's fine if you have condensation build-up on the outside of your windows, but it's not a good sign if you have condensation build-up inside your window. Condensation should never build up on the inside of your home. Moisture inside your windows indicates that your seal is damaged, which means your windows need to be replaced once the seal is not working anymore.

Drafts

If you place your hand in front of the window and feel a draft, this can also be a sign that the seal on your window is not working. Your windows shouldn't ever allow the outdoor air inside. Plus, drafts can impact your energy efficiency. If your windows are drafty, it's time to call a trusted company to replace them.

Dirt

If you clean your windows and they still appear dirty, it may be that your seal is broken and the dirt is trapped between the double panes. When the seal fails, it allows dirt and grime to get trapped, making it impossible to clean the window. The seal on your window is one of the most important parts of your window. Unfortunately, if the seal fails, the only option is to replace the window. Fortunately, new replacement windows improve your home's value and help keep energy costs down.
